5th Bitcoin Anniversary

El Zonte Started It. Now the World Is Coming Back.

Five years ago, a fishing village most maps didn't bother to label became the reason a country changed its constitution money. El Zonte, "Bitcoin Beach" to anyone who's spent time here, is where the experiment started small: a surf school, a tienda, a handful of families willing to get paid in sats and see what happened.

‍
What happened is history. The Bitcoin Law followed. Then came the wave nobody could have planned for.

‍

The Big Bang Nobody Saw Coming

Bitcoin Beach didn't just inspire a law. It inspired a pattern, and that pattern has been replicating up and down this country ever since. Ask anyone who's been paying attention and they'll tell you the same thing: what started in El Zonte is now happening in pockets all over El Salvador, each one built by people who saw a working model and said, we can do that here too.

Berlín has one. La Laguna has one. Pirraya, on the coast. La Costa. Suchitoto, up in the hills. Chalchuapa. Santa Ana. Oriente, out east. Citadel of Hope in Punta Mango. Each community found its own reason to start, a family business, a church group, a handful of friends tired of remittance fees eating into what their relatives abroad sent home. Different starting points, same destination: Bitcoin as something you actually use, not just something you watch on a chart.

El Salvador now has more circular economies than any other country on earth. Not the most headlines. Not the most speculation. The most places where a stranger can walk in, buy bread, pay a taxi, and settle up in bitcoin without anyone blinking. That's medium-of-exchange adoption, built one merchant conversation at a time, by people with no marketing budget and a lot of conviction.
And the number keeps climbing. Every year, somewhere new joins the map.

‍

The World Is Coming to See It For Themselves

This November, that momentum gets a stage.

The Global Bitcoin Circular Economies Summit returns to El Zonte on November 19–20, 2026, bringing organizers, educators, and builders from circular economies around the world back to the beach where the whole idea started. If you've ever wondered what it looks like when the people actually doing the work sit down together, this is it.

The speaker list is already shaping up to be one of the strongest yet:

‍
●          Juan Galt
●          Gerson Martinez
●          Efrat Fenigson
●          Pedro Fadida
●          ThgO.O
●          Tomás Chacón
●          Pamela Posada
●          Jeremy Almond
●          Alexandra Navarro
●          Gerardo Linares
●          Evelyn Lemus
‍

Each of them brings a different piece of the puzzle, education, on-the-ground merchant adoption, media, community organizing, and together they'll be unpacking what actually works when you're trying to build an economy that runs on Bitcoin, not just talks about it.

‍
And Before the Summit, the Whole Ecosystem Shows Up
‍

The Summit doesn't stand alone. It's the centerpiece of a stretch of days where the entire Bitcoin ecosystem in El Salvador converges:
‍

●          Bitcoin Histórico, November 11–12 | where the story of how we got here gets told properly, by the people who lived it.
●          The Global Bitcoin Circular Economies Summit, November 19–20, right here in El Zonte.
●          A run of side events filling the days between, as circular economy leaders from across the country and around the world make the trip to the coast.
‍

For about two weeks in November, El Zonte becomes the meeting point for a global conversation, and the answer to that conversation is standing right here, in a village that decided years ago to just start using the thing.

‍

Bitcoin Is Money. El Salvador Is Bitcoin Country.

That's not a slogan for us. It's what happens when you walk into a pupusería in Chalchuapa or a taxi stand in Santa Ana and pay in sats without a second thought. It's merchants who stopped asking "wait, how does this work?" years ago. It's a country that took a bet most of the world laughed at, and kept building anyway.

The golden age of circular economies isn't coming. It's already here, and it's growing louder every year. This November, come see it for yourself.

See you in El Zonte.
